Character Information
Name: Emizel
Canon: Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten
Canon Point: Post-Main Story
Age: 1324 (Acts and looks roughly 13)
History: Wiki article only covers about the first half of canon but it catches the bulk of Emizel's progression/arc.
Personality:
Emizel had a very sheltered existence. Prior to being abandoned by Hugo he never had to travel far without a bodyguard or two to watch his back. In turn Emizel barely did anything on his own. He barely knew how to really fight, and later admits that he never killed someone before (or more specifically, reaped a soul as Death). Confronting Valvatorez as Abaddon leader was or less the first part of the wake-up call how pathetic he actually was. At first he tried making up excuses why he lost so badly. After all, he has a strong demon heritage, he should be strong too without trying.
While Emizel is very naive and child-like at times, he is certainly not completely stupid. The extent of his knowledge in never clear, but he does seem to at least know every in and out and every big named demon in the Netherworld; all likely due to the fact he used to live right in the center of it all, the Blight House. He's also fairly aware of demon history, at least the parts his dad didn't purposefully hide from him, and the general quirks of most supernatural beings (Why vampires drink blood? What Prinnies are made of? What happens at a Red Moon? How can you go from a human to an angel?) This is partly because Emizel used to read a lot too, presumably before the Netherworld reached its electronic age. His favorite stories were about the demons that terrorized the Human World about 400 years ago. Specifically it was about a Tyrant named Valvatorez, the strongest of them all. The very same Valvatorez that turned into a sardine-obsessed Prinny instructor that would later kick his ass.
Despite abusing his father's title for as long as he can remember, Emizel does actually care a lot for him. It's a trait that seems to be pretty uncommon among demons, as most kids generally want to surpass their parents in some way (Or it's their own special way of showing appreciation). But Emizel claims to know his dad better than anyone and trusts his judgement. He was even able to pick up that something was different than usual going on in the corrupternment in the last couple years, but never bothered to question it. Emizel refused to believe that his father would want him dead, even after a squad was about to kill him. And though Emizel finally joined the rest of the Hades group, it wasn't out of revenge, all he wanted to do was prove himself. Maybe initially Emizel wanted to be immediately accepted again, but eventually it lead to brighter goals: Have his name really mean something. Emizel now knew that if he dies, he's going to be instantly forgotten. Nobody cares about him. He never achieved anything. He had to change all of that.
From around that point and on Emizel began to learn about a lot of important things. Val taught him the meaning of promises, and what happens if you don't keep them - though the weight of the consequence didn't sink in till much later. How he should never give up even when things are at its worst. And over all what it's pretty much like to fight alongside others, even if they were all working together for different reasons.
It's made as a sort of running gag that Emizel hates fish too, to counter act with Valvatorez and his obsession with sardines. Then again since it is a common food group that children hate there may be others he's picky about.
As well as other common kid tropes that sort of just happen due to age (even though he's over 1300). His form of intimidation when first met was pretending to be a 90s gangster/rapper; whether or not that dated even for their times, he does at least know what some media is and a shallow understanding of what is supposed to be cool. There's also things Emizel's just irrationally afraid about, such as women. Granted, he may not be that used to being around to the opposite gender than much. And when you're best examples are Fuka, Desco, and Artina...basically there is a lot of eccentric crazy to go around. It takes him longer to trust females more than others, without that much knowledge on the love and romance section he probably still thinks cooties are real too.
While Emizel did become very ambitious more recently, he can still be pessimistic and negative a lot of the time. Again because of his knowledge of the Netherworld, he knows just how bad of a disadvantage Valvatorez's team had against the full force of the corrupternment (though still thinking it wasn't weaker now), and constantly going on about how none of them stood a chance. This attitude did start to change however once they did manage to survive every little thing thrown at them. Eventually their battles went beyond just things in the Netherworld, such as protecting the moon and eventually having to challenge God Himself. Emizel stopped worrying over if the plans would actually work or not, but he is careful about picking his battles and which hills he prefers to lie on. He's pretty focused on what he wants and what he needs to do to get it. Unless he finds something, or someone equally as important will Emizel stick himself out there. ...And now he's aware that he can survive more things than he realized, so. Yeah.
Abilities:
Outdated skill exhibition page right here however tl;dr: Emizel excels at fire, ice, and wind magic; and has much stronger temporary transformation/true form.
Although Emizel essentially has black mage stats (lots of magic power, frail everywhere else), demons are implied to be pretty sturdy and difficult to actually kill. Making him probably more defensively adapted than a normal human at least, but given his size and age, definitely not at the highest potential yet. He's undoubtedly tougher than a human at his age, but for a demon, he's on the weaker side. Also, his throwing stat is pretty damn lame.
Demons also have keener senses too, although the only one that's really confirmed is hearing (I guess the pointed ears are good for something), but it can be assumed that sight and smell is better too. Actually it might as well be a fact that they have amazing night vision when most of the Netherworld is dark and dreary anyway. As well as a little bit of sixth senses, sometimes being able to pick up presences and see supernatural/paranormal activity (Which Emizel could probably excel at even more given his role as Death, but needs practice at).
Since Emizel is Death, he is capable of reaping souls; although this probably only works on Prinnies or those already dead to begin with. Your mileage can vary. Either way watch out for the scythe, it's pointy and he knows how to use it - sort of, anyway.
Bottom line there is a lot of potential here and there, but since he's so bitty and new, lot of it hasn't been realized yet.
Strengths: Knowledgeable, Outspoken, Loyal, Determined, Brave in the sense that he'll face danger when he needs to most
Weaknesses: Naive, Bratty, Timid, Stubborn, Physically Frail/Small
God/Shinki: God
Why?:
Emizel's growth is all about him making his own legacy so history won't forget him, and to become a leader that the Netherworld needs. It's not very different than the responsibilities that Gods face on a daily basis. They need followers to live and they need to perform tasks in order to keep them.
He is also already a reaper, with knowledge with how the afterlife usually works and beyond and the ability to send souls to it. In some cultures he would probably qualify as a god already, if not a lesser one. Being a Shinki would be be the greatest fit.
Top 3 Choices: Thanatos (First choice), Anubis (Second choice), or Nergal
God Type:
Emizel would have a bit of that 'kid in a candy store' syndrome. Any follower he gets, no matter how big or small, would make him the happiest ever because there's people that believe in him (literally). So he will work extra hard on answering prayers so that one day everyone might notice him.
It means he will be extra nice to his shinki too, so long as their personalities get along. Trying super hard not to break the golden rule because he will want to know everything there is about them. And give them some freedom; even if they are hisvassals weapons, they deserve good things too.
Power:
(If Thanatos) - Since later interpretations of Thanatos say that he's the god of peaceful deaths, and a more cupid/cherubic appearance, Emizel's god ability is Fear Negation. Anyone near him would feel at ease about anything they're currently worried about. In most cases it replaces fear with calm, relaxing effects. However if Emizel over does it can make someone feel reckless, fitting into the modern meaning of Thanatos and 'death drives'. Emizel's power doesn't have much effect though unless the person is actually afraid of something at that moment, or him (somehow), or death itself.
(If Anubis) - Truth Inducement or Lie Detection, depending on which version feels less OP (though a permission post would be added if accepted). Basically Emizel would be able to either tell if someone is lying to him, or force them to tell the truth, presumably by looking in the eye or some other minor limitation.
